Colonel Jose M. Thompson graduated from the United States Military Academy in June 1990 and was commissioned a 2LT of Field Artillery. His military education includes the Field Artillery Basic and Advanced Courses, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (2002), and the National War College (2013). He earned masters’ degrees in Organizational Leadership and Development from Central Michigan University and National Security Strategy from National Defense University.

From 1991 to 1994, COL Thompson served as a Reconnaissance and Survey Officer, Battery Fire Direction Officer, Troop Fire Support Officer, Platoon Leader, and Battery Executive Officer in 2nd BN, 20th Field Artillery and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Germany. After completing the FACCC in 1995, he reported to the XVIII Airborne Corps Artillery and served as the G3 Current Operations Officer, the 229th Aviation Regimental Fire Support Officer, and Assistant Fire Support Coordinator. From 1997 to 2001, COL Thompson commanded two batteries in 3-321th FAR and XVIII ABN Corps Artillery. After graduating from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in 2002, COL Thompson served in and deployed to OIF I with the 101st Airborne Division as a Brigade Fire Support Officer, Battalion S3, and Battalion XO in 2nd Battalion, 320th FAR. In 2005, COL Thompson was assigned to the United States Army Special Operations Command and served as the Fire Support Officer for the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). While assigned to the Group, COL Thompson deployed to Afghanistan in support of OEF VI, VIII, X, serving as the J35 – Future Operations Officer, J5 Director, J3 Director, and Deputy Commanding Officer for the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Afghanistan. From October 2008 to October 2010, COL Thompson commanded the 3rd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. In 2009 COL Thompson deployed as the commander of TF Gun Devil to Anbar Province, Iraq in support of OIF 09-10. From January 2011 to June 2012, COL Thompson served as the Senior Fire Support Observer/Coach/Mentor, “F06”, at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, LA. In August 2013 he assumed the duties Director FCoE CIG. From June 2014 to June 2016, COL Thompson commanded the 434th Field Artillery Brigade at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. From August 2016 to August 2018, he served as the J35, United States Africa Command. From September 2018 to January 2019 he served as the Director, Fires and Effects, United States Army South. On 01 February 2019, COL Thompson assumed the duties of Chief of Staff, U.S. Army South.  

COL Thompson’s awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Over Seas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Air Assault Badge, Combat Action Badge and Master Parachutist Badge.

COL Thompson is married to the former Lynda Lou Wright of New Jersey. They have two children.
