FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WHAT: U.S. military and civilian leaders, Grenadian senior officials, community representatives, U.S. military veterans, and the families of U.S. service members killed during military operations in Grenada will commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the U.S.-Caribbean intervention that began Oct. 25, 1983 to restore security and democratic institutions in the Eastern Caribbean island state.  In Grenada, the anniversary is called Thanksgiving Day.

WHO: U.S. Marine Gen. John Kelly, commander of U.S. Southern Command, will travel to Grenada, Oct. 24-25, where he will join U.S. Ambassador Larry Palmer, Grenada Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, Grenada Governor General Cecile La Grenade, U.S. military veterans of the operation, families of U.S. troops who died during the operation, and the people of Grenada to honor the memory of those killed in  the intervention and commemorate the start of the mission three decades ago.

WHEN and WHERE: Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, Grenada. Event times and locations include:

  • 10 a.m.: Thanksgiving Day Ecumenical Service, St. John’s Anglican Church, Gouyave.

  • 3:30 p.m.: Wreath Laying at the Intervention Memorial Monument, near Maurice Bishop International Airport.

  • 5 p.m.: Memorial Ceremony at the monument to U.S. service members who lost their lives during the intervention, St. George’s University, True Blue Campus.. Participating speakers include: Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, Grenada; Gen. John Kelly, U.S. Southern Command and Chancellor Charles R. Modica, St. George’s University.

  • 6 p.m. Press Availability, question and answer session with Memorial Ceremony speakers at St. George’s University.
